Children with learning difficulties are often labelled as “lazy” or “stupid” because they dislike studying.

Since parents bring their children to a psychiatrist for reasons apart from SLD, a detailed history workup of the child’s problems in school, at home and in tuition classes is required.

  • History Taking – Physical and mental status examination of child is done. Informal assessment of reading, writing, spelling and maths skills is done.

Screening for common co-morbid disorders including ADHD, behaviour problems, depression, anxiety etc.

  • Psychometric Testing: Psychometric testing helps in the confirmation of diagnosis and in planning the intervention. The first assessment of the child’s level of Intelligence is done by measuring IQ using Standardized IQ tests. Next psychometric testing usually includes testing for cognitive abilities and testing for academic abilities. These elaborate tests will be conducted by a psychologist. Further tests may be administered to diagnose or quantify ADHD, emotional issues, ASD etc.
  • Medications – Medications might be required to treat underlying ADHD, depression, and anxiety to improve the child’s mental health and overall well-being.
  • Additional consultations with Occupational therapists, Speech therapists and Paediatricians may be required.
  • Family Counselling – Psychoeducating parents about the impact of SLD in their child’s life.
  • Remedial education – It is an intervention aimed at assisting a child to achieve a better level of learning when performance is below expectations in a particular area.
It is a child-centric strategy taught for learning the content, focusing on strengthening the basics, especially in literacy and numeracy.
A remedial educator/ special educator can assist the students by teaching the fundamentals of reading, written language, math, and study/organizational skills using innovative, multisensory methods like refined practice, repetition of content, and clarification.
  • Other accommodations can be provided at the school level after thorough SLD testing and certification.
